Villa Medici is in the heart of Rome near the famous Spanish Steps and the Villa Borghese estate. The property history dates back more than 2000 years and includes numerous transformations, so its witnessed a lot of Italian history!
Originally part of the 'Gardens of Lucullus', the estate also served as a military camp during the Byzantine Empire. In 1576, Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici acquired the property and in collaboration with Bartolomeo Ammanati, undertook significant renovations, giving the villa its current name.
The property remained in the Medici family until the 1800's when the French State acquired it and still to this day own it and they have housed an academy there since the early 1800s.
You can explore its exquisite gardens which offer incredible views of Rome, and the gallery, which is home to an impressive art collection which was amassed by Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici. It includes around 400 pieces and features paintings, tapestries, and sculptures, the show the rich artistic heritage of the villa.
