Discover one of Rome's richest art collections in a stunning city palace
The Doria Pamphilj Gallery, or 'Palazzo Doria Pamphilj Gallery' is not only the Doria Pamphilj family's private collection, but it is also one of Rome's hidden treasures. The gallery, which has more than 650 pieces, is in the Doria Pamphilj family home, which is itself worth seeing!
Amongst the highlights are Caravaggio's "Rest on the Flight to Egypt" and Velázquez's renowned "Portrait of Pope Innocent X." The latter is the famous piece that depicts Giovanni Battista Pamphilj, a member of the Pamphilj family, and is celebrated as one of history's finest portraits.
When the Doria and Pamphilj families joined through marriage, it allowed the collection to be created as two power houses came together creating this extraordinary collection.
The gallery may be less well known than some of Rome's other galleries, but the Doria Pamphilj Gallery has an impressive collection of 16th and 17th-century art, including oil paintings, sculptures, and frescoes. The collection was designed to astonish, reflecting the family's intent to show their wealth and taste as they created it.
The palace is still a family residence, which adds a unique charm to the experience. The blend of living history and art makes the gallery a must for art lovers, as it offers an intimate glimpse into the opulence and cultural heritage of one of Rome's noble families. The palace itself is also a work of art and the result of multiple additions, restorations and expansions over the last 500 years. The gallery spans 4 wings and multiple rooms at the heart of the property and overlooks a beautiful central courtyard. As well as the art, you can enjoy the rooms such as the Hall of Mirrors, which was inspired by Versailles and is full of mirrors, frescoes and statues.
