About MUSA Cancún Underwater Art Museum

MUSA Underwater Art Museum is one of the most unusual attractions in the sea off the coast of Cancún.

It's more than an underwater museum. The sculptures are designed to become part of the surrounding marine environment, providing a foundation for coral growth while creating new habitats for fish and other marine life.

The site was established in 2009 as a collaboration between the Mexican government, the National Marine Park, and the Cancún Nautical Association. The aim was to redirect visitors away from fragile natural reefs while encouraging the growth of artificial reefs.

The Submerged Sculptures

The sculptures were all created by different artists to ensure no two are alike. They range in size and shape from realistic human figures to abstract shapes and create a thought-provoking experience for divers, snorkellers, and those visiting by glass-bottom boat.

Coral Growth

MUSA's mission goes beyond art, as it plays a vital ecological role. The sculptures are crafted from materials that encourage coral growth, helping foster new reef systems while relieving pressure on the region's natural reefs, which have suffered due to tourism.

Over time, coral, algae and other marine organisms colonise the sculptures, gradually transforming them into living reefs that attract fish, rays and countless other sea creatures.

The blend of art and conservation makes MUSA a model for protecting delicate underwater ecosystems, and a concept that could be replicated in reef areas around the world.

Options for MUSA Cancún Underwater Museum

  1. Diving at Manchones Reef
Certified divers can explore the full MUSA experience. At depths of around 8–10 metres, divers can explore the museum's largest collection of sculptures while swimming amongst tropical fish and growing coral formations.
  2. Snorkelling at Punta Nizuc
The museum offers a snorkelling experience at Punta Nizuc which is at the southern tip of the hotel zone. Because the sculptures are only 2–4 metres below the surface, Punta Nizuc is ideal for beginners and families who want to experience MUSA without scuba diving.
  3. Glass-Bottom Boat Tour
Prefer to stay dry - opt for a glass-bottom boat tour instead. This option lets you view the underwater sculptures from the comfort of a boat, providing a clear view of the artwork without ever stepping into the water.
  4. Visitor Center at Plaza Kukulcán
For a dry-land alternative, visit the MUSA Cancún Visitor Center which is at the Plaza Kukulcán Mall. The center has 26 replica sculptures and one original piece in the sculpture garden. The center also features a photo exhibition that shows the history and creation of MUSA.
