About The Borghese Gallery

The gallery is in the former 'Villa Borghese Pinciana', an incredible 17th century villa commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V.

The Borghese family owned the property until 1902 when the Italian government acquired it and turned it into a public museum.

The gallery is one of Rome's most popular attractions and is home to the former private art collection of the Borghese family, one of the largest private collections in the world.

The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and antiques including ancient Roman pieces, Renaissance pieces and Baroque art.

Famous Masterpieces Include:

  • Saint Jerome Writing by Caravaggio
  • Deposition of Christ by Raphael
  • Sacred and Profane Love by Titian
  • David and Apollo and Daphne by Bernini
  • The Rape of Proserpina by Bernini
  • Venus Victrix by Canova, the semi-nude sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix.

Visitors can also enjoy an impressive collection of ancient mosaics, frescoes and decorative arts which were curated by the Borghese family, a wealthy and noble family that moved to Rome in the 16th century.

The collection became so large that it was moved into Villa Borghese Pinciana and it eventually became the public museum now known as Galleria Borghese.

The gallery is surrounded by the beautiful estate and it's common to visit the gallery and then enjoy a peaceful walk around the gardens.

Highlights include:

Bernini sculptures:

  • Apollo and Daphne
  • David
  • The Rape of Proserpina

Caravaggio Paintings:

  • David with the Head of Goliath
  • Boy with a Basket of Fruit
  • Young Sick Bacchus

FUN FACT: The Borghese Family and Napoleon Bonaparte are related due to Napoleon's sister, Pauline Bonaparte marrying a member of the Borghese family.

Borghese Gallery tickets regularly sell out due to strict visitor limits, especially during spring and summer. Check availability online in advance to secure your preferred entry time.
