About Sovereign Hill

Sovereign Hill is an open-air museum in Ballarat, Victoria, around 90 minutes west of Melbourne. The open-air museum authentically recreates the bustling atmosphere of a 1850s gold rush town and offers you a chance to step back in time to experience Australia's rich gold mining history.

Things to see at Sovereign Hill

  • Main Street: Lined with over 60 historically recreated buildings, including working shops, hotels, and a theatre, which are all based on original Ballarat businesses. Costumed staff and volunteers help to enhance the experience.
  • Gold Panning: Try your luck at panning for real gold in the creek. Use the gold pans provided, and its 'finders keepers'!
  • Gold Pour Demonstration: See A$150,000 worth of molten gold being poured into a mould to create a gleaming bar, showing the process of gold smelting.
  • Underground Mine Tours: Explore the subterranean world of gold mining with a guided tour that delves into the history and techniques of the era.
  • Rare Trades Centre: See traditional crafts and trades at the Rare Trades Centre where the Sovereign Hill artisans demonstrate skills from the 1850s.
  • AURA Sound and Light Show: By night, experience "AURA," a sound and light show that explores space, delves into the Dreamtime, and re-lives Australia's most important rebellion and all under the night sky. Separate ticket is required for AURA.

The open-air museum is spread over 15 hectares on an authentic ex-gold mining site and offers 18 different activities that take place throughout the day including:

  • Musket firing
  • Watching boiled lollies being made
  • Wheelwrights making and fixing wheels
  • Blacksmiths showing their skills
  • Candles dipping by the artisans using traditional methods.

A great place for all ages to enjoy.
