Sovereign Hill Tickets - Prices & Visitor Information

What is Sovereign Hill in Ballarat?

  • Sovereign Hill is an open-air living museum that recreates a gold rush town from the 1850s. Instead of simply looking at displays, you walk through streets filled with working shops, costumed staff, and hands-on activities that bring Ballarat’s gold mining history to life.
  • You’ll see traditional crafts being demonstrated, from candle making to blacksmithing, and there’s plenty of opportunity to join in rather than just observe.
  • One of the most popular experiences is gold panning in the creek, where visitors can try their luck and keep anything they find.
  • It’s popular with families because it feels interactive and relaxed and children can explore freely, watch demonstrations, and get a sense of what life was like during the gold rush without it feeling like a formal museum visit.
  • Although it’s set up like a town, everything is based on real history from the Ballarat goldfields.
