About Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace & Gardens in Vienna is one of Europe's most famous Baroque landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once the summer residence of the Habsburgs, it offers a fascinating insight into imperial life in Austria.

The palace is closely associated with Empress Maria Theresa, who transformed it into the grand residence we see today. With its impressive architecture, rich history, and beautifully maintained gardens, Schönbrunn is one of Vienna’s must-visit attractions.

History of Schönbrunn Palace

Originally designed in the 17th century, Schönbrunn Palace was later redesigned in the 18th century under Empress Maria Theresa into a magnificent and opulent Baroque residence.

Today, it is one of the largest palaces in Europe with 1,441 rooms, around 40 of which are open to the public.

Inside you will find elegant Rococo interiors featuring ornate frescoes, crystal chandeliers, and fine porcelain collections.

Room highlights inside the palace

  • The State Rooms: The state apartments show the grandeur of the Habsburg court. They include the private rooms of the Emperor and Empress, richly decorated in Baroque and Rococo style.
  • The Great Gallery: One of the most impressive halls in the palace, the grand hall was used for court functions and official events. It features spectacular ceiling frescoes and large windows which offer views of the gardens.
  • The Hall of Mirrors: A highlight of the palace, the elegant room reflects the power and prestige of the Habsburg Empire. It also famously hosted performances by a young Mozart.

The Schönbrunn Gardens

The palace gardens are one of the highlights of any visit. Spanning over 500 acres, they are beautifully designed and free to explore in many areas.

  • The Neptune Fountain: Sitting at the foot of the hill, the grand Baroque fountain is one of the most photographed spots in the gardens.
  • The Gloriette: Sits on a hilltop above the palace, the Gloriette offers panoramic views over Vienna and houses a café where you can sit and relax with a drink.
