The Royal Alcázar of Seville is a beautiful palace complex in the heart of Seville. The Alcázar is one of the best examples of Mudejar architecture in the country and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a long history with its origins dating back to the 10th century when it was originally constructed as a fort for the city's Muslim rulers. Over the centuries it’s had numerous expansions, renovations, and additions, which are reflected with its various cultural influences that have shaped the region over time and blends Islamic, Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles, making it a masterpiece of architectural evolution.
The palace complex consists of various sections:
- The Palacio Mudéjar, or 'Mudéjar Palace': One of the most famous parts of the Alcázar features intricate tilework, stucco decorations, and beautiful courtyards which have fountains and gardens.
- The Patio de las Doncellas: (Courtyard of the Maidens) is also famous for its beautiful architecture and reflecting pool.
- The Palacio de Pedro I: The 'Palace of Peter I', was built in the 14th century by King Peter of Castile and has Mudéjar architecture, with elaborately decorated ceilings, arches, and plasterwork.
- The Alcázar's Gardens: A popular spot that offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city streets. The gardens feature beautiful greenery, colourful flowers, ponds, and architectural elements including pavilions, pergolas, and fountains. The 'Garden of the Poets', the 'Garden of the Dance', and the 'Garden of the Prince' are amongst the most famous sections of the Alcázar's extensive gardens.
