About Reina Sofia Museum

The Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid is one of the most prominent museums in the country and a major centre for contemporary and modern art.

The museum is in a former 18-century hospital building called the ‘Hospital de San Carlos’, which was converted into a museum and opened in 1992, and named after Queen Sofia of Spain. It was then extended in 2005 with a new building which was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

The museum is in the city's cultural hub near other major museums including the 'Prado Museum' and the 'Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum', making it part of the city's renowned "Golden Triangle of Art."

The Collection

The museum's collection includes around 20,000 pieces which primarily focus on Spanish art from the 20th century to the present day, but it does feature some international artists as well.

  • Pablo Picasso: The Reina Sofia holds an impressive collection of works by Picasso, one of the most influential figures in 20th-century art. The collection includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and ceramics spanning Picasso's career and shows his evolution as an artist and his ground-breaking contributions to modern art. The highlight of the collection is "Guernica," Picasso's monumental masterpiece which depicts the horrors of the Spanish Civil War.
  • Salvador Dalí: Dali is another major figure in Spanish art. You can enjoy a selection of Dalí's surrealistic paintings, sculptures, and drawings, which exemplify his eccentric style and imaginative creativity.
  • Joan Miró: The museum also features works by Catalan artist Joan Miró, who was known for his playful and abstract compositions. Miró's works in the collection show his use of bold colours, organic shapes, and symbolic imagery, reflecting his unique artistic vision.
  • Spanish Surrealism: In addition to Dalí and Miró, the museum's collection includes works by other Spanish Surrealist artists such as Óscar Domínguez, Remedios Varo & Esteban Vicente. The artists explored themes of the subconscious, dreams, and fantasy, contributing to the collection of Surrealist art.
  • Spanish Civil War Art: Given its historical significance, the museum has an impressive collection of art related to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). In addition to Picasso's "Guernica," the collection includes works by other artists who responded to the conflict by offering their perspectives on the war's impact on society and culture.
  • Contemporary Art: The museum continues to collect and exhibit contemporary art from Spain and around the world which includes works in various forms such as painting, sculpture, photography, as well as more modern art which includes video art, and installation art, which represents modern artistic voices.

The Reina Sofia Museum is a must for art lovers.
