About Oceanário de Lisboa
The aquarium was built for the 1998 World Exposition held in Lisbon, and it has since become one of the city’s most visited attractions. The building is also award-winning for its architecture and appears to be floating on top of a man-made lake.
The enormous 5,000 m³ central tank creates the feeling of walking beside the open ocean, with sharks, rays, and thousands of marine creatures swimming past you from every level.
Oceanário de Lisboa Highlights
- One Planet, One Ocean: This is the aquarium's star attraction. The huge 5-million-litre saltwater tank (equivalent to more than 2 Olympic-sized swimming pools) contains around 15,000 marine creatures from hundreds of species, including penguins, puffins, axolotls and otters, jellyfish, sea stars, cuttlefish, and hundreds of fish species. Visitors can enjoy both underwater and above-water viewing areas.
- Underwater Forest: A beautiful freshwater aquarium designed by Takashi Amano. It is made up of more than 40 types of aquatic plants and home to thousands of tropical freshwater fish.
- Submerged Universe: A new immersive journey where visitors can explore how marine ecosystems are connected, from tiny plankton to the gigantic whales.
- Sea Otters: Watch the playful sea otters as they go about their daily lives.
Venture beyond the main tank and you will find more habitats which include the rugged North Atlantic coast and the colourful coral reefs of the Tropical Indian Ocean.
Also included in the Oceanário de Lisboa experience is "Forests Underwater". A 40-metre-long aquarium with a soundtrack created by Rodrigo Leão, it transports you into the immersive but peaceful realm of tropical rainforests that are submerged beneath the surface. With 160,000 litres of freshwater, it offers a beautiful glimpse into the underwater rainforest landscapes.
Oceanário de Lisboa also focuses strongly on marine conservation and environmental education, so your visit promises to be both enlightening and entertaining as you explore the intricate ecosystems found throughout the aquarium.
