The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is one of the oldest and most important museums in the country. The gallery was founded over 150 years ago in 1861, and it has a significnat and diverse collection of art including pieces from both Australian and international artists as well as sculptures, artefacts, important pieces of jewellery and more with over 75,000 pieces in its collection which it rotates.
The gallery is spread acorss two sites, the 'NGV International', on St Kilda Road and The 'Ian Potter Centre' which is part of the Federation Square complex. NGV International focuses on a global art collection and has works ranging from European old masters to contemporary art. The Ian Potter Centre is more focused on Indigenous Australian art, modern Australian art, and photography.
Whether you're interested in exploring centuries-old European art or modern Australian masterpieces, NGV is an experience for all to enjoy. As well as the permanent collection, it regularly hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year, including CARTIER, Melbourne Winter Masterpieces that runs from 12th June - 4th October 2026 that will include more than 300 pieces of jewellery including jewels, watches, tiaras as well as design sketches. You will be able to see some of the history of the famous brand and learn about the design process including pieces worn by royalty.
