The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is the oldest and one of the most prominent art museums in the country. The gallery was founded over 150 years ago in 1861, and it houses a vast and diverse collection of art, including pieces from both Australian and international artists as well as sculptures, artefacts, important pieces of jewellery and more with over 75,000 pieces in its collection, which it rotates.
NGV International focuses on a global art collection and offers works ranging from European old masters to contemporary art. The Ian Potter Centre highlights Indigenous Australian art, modern Australian art, and photography.
Whether you're interested in exploring centuries-old European art or modern Australian masterpieces, NGV offers an experience for all ages to enjoy. As well as the permanent collection, it regularly hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year, including CARTIER, Melbourne Winter Masterpieces that runs from 12th June - 4th October 2026 that will include more than 300 pieces of jewellery including jewels, watches, tiaras as well as design sketches. You will be able to see some of the history of the famous brand and learn about the design process including pieces worn by royalty.
