About The Murano Glass Museum

Murano glass is a world-famous craft that originated on Murano Island in Venice.

The glass is known for:

  • Bright, vivid colours
  • Gold and silver leaf detailing
  • Handcrafted production techniques
  • Unique imperfections that make every piece one of a kind

Each piece is made by skilled artisans using traditional methods passed down through generations. Authentic Murano glass is only made on Murano Island itself. Many imitation products exist that only follow Murano techniques or styles but are not true Murano glass.

The expert glass makers use various different minerals to create the colourful pieces and effects and often layer colours. They don’t use exact measurements and because it's done by hand, the glassware will have beautiful imperfections.

Some glassware manufacturers use exotic wording with their products such as “vetro eseguito secondo la tecnica dei maestri di Murano” but this is not Murano Glass. It translates to “glass created following the technique of Murano masters”, which means it’s not true Murano.

The Murano Glass Museum in the impressive Palazzo Giustunian (a Gothic-style palace) covers the 1000+year history of glassmaking in Murano and shows some of the incredible works that were created between the 15th and 20th centuries, including world-famous Murano masterpieces.

You may also be able to watch the master glaziers practising their craft.
