Mestalla Stadium Tour Fun Facts

  • War-Time Service: During the Spanish Civil War, Mestalla was used as a concentration camp and storage depot for military vehicles. It sustained heavy damage, and it took years of repairs before Valencia CF could return to play there in 1941.
  • Nickname - "The Cathedral": Mestalla is often called "La Catedral del Fútbol" (The Cathedral of Football) due to its historical significance and intense atmosphere. Its towering, steep stands make it an intimidating venue for visiting teams.
  • The Steepest Stands: Mestalla is famous for having some of the steepest stands in European football, creating a unique and intense experience for both fans and players. This steep design amplifies the sound, making it an especially loud and lively stadium.
  • Home of the "Murciélago" (Bat): Valencia’s mascot and symbol is a bat, which you can see in various places around Mestalla, including the club's crest. The bat is also a historical emblem of the city of Valencia, symbolising luck and prosperity!
  • A Never-Completed Successor: Valencia CF started construction on a new stadium, Nou Mestalla, in 2007. However, financial issues stopped construction, and Mestalla remains the club's home. Plans to finish Nou Mestalla are still discussed, but it’s been over a decade with no completion date in sight!
