For around 10 weeks a year, the annual Keukenhof Tulip Festival takes place on the Keukenhof Castle estate in Lisse, a village just outside Amsterdam. The Tulip Festival is set across 79 acres of the castle's estate and during the annual flower festival, Keukenhof Gardens become awash with colour as the flowers start to bloom.
The Keukenhof gardeners plant more than 7,000,000 bulbs each year which go on to bloom and create the incredible flower displays. The gardeners start to plant the flower bulbs in the October of the year before and stagger them in order to try and create a constant bloom for the Keukenhof Flower Festival.
The Keukenhof Tulip Festival was set up by a group of flower growers and businessmen so that they could show off their product range as a 'Living Catalogue' for potential buyers to see in person. They held their first show in 1950 and also decided to open it to the public so they could enjoy it as well and it was an instant success and has grown ever since.
Keukenhof now regularly welcomes more than 1 million people each year during it's short opening period which is between mid-March to mid-May, and to use its nickname, the ‘Garden of Europe’ welcomes people from all over the world who come to enjoy the amazing displays of beauty put on by the flower growers and Keukenhof gardeners.
The flowers are planted by colour, size and height in order to create the spectacular displays. They are planted at different times to try and ensure a constant bloom during the short two-month period its open for. Although the majority of the displays are tulips, there are also other flowers and plants on display including crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths amongst others.
It's a family favourite for a day out. Something that all ages can enjoy and another reason why people travel from all over the world to experience and enjoy the annual flower festival.
