El Caminito del Rey, which translates to "The King's Little Path," (named after King Alfonso XIII) is a thrilling hiking experience! The path is in the beautiful coastal cliffs near the town of Ardales in Málaga and the historic walkway offers a combination of natural beauty, history, and an adrenaline for those brave enough!
El Caminito del Rey is a 7.7-kilometer-long one-way path, some of which is pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge that runs along the coastal cliffs. It was originally built in the early 20th century to allow workers to transport materials to the nearby hydroelectric power plants that were being built, but once the plants were completed (in 1921) the path then fell into disrepair over the years and was eventually closed due to safety reasons in 2000.
However, in 2011, the government of Andalusia, along with the local government in Malaga, decided to restore the walkway so it could be enjoyed again! The project took 4 years and in 2015, it was finally reopened. It’s now an amazing hiking trail which includes cliffside paths and crosses hanging bridges, and offers amazing views of the Gaitanes Gorge!
The site is also a protected area due to its beauty and the wildlife that lives there.
It is safe but its not for the faint hearted!
