About Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Zoo covers 265 acres, making it one of the largest metropolitan urban zoos in the United States. The zoo offers something for everyone, so is great for all ages.

Step into the magical Butterfly Garden where they glide gracefully past you. Stay still and see if they land on you! See prairie dogs, North American porcupines & fennec foxes. Visit the petting farm and get up close with the animals at the Children's Zoo. Then, venture into Jungle World, which is based on a tropical rainforest in Asia and home to animals including monkeys, otters, bats, ibis, gharial and tapir, so plenty to see!

During the summer months you can get around the Bronx Zoo on the Zoo Shuttle, which allows you to hop on and off at different stops to explore various exhibits. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, embark on the Nature Trek, where you can wander along nature trails and see the wildlife in their natural habitats.

Zoo Zones:

  • Congo Gorilla Forest: Covering around 6.5 acres with a trail walk that you can enjoy (around a third of a mile). Although it’s called ‘Congo Gorilla Forest’, you will find a few different species in the zone including: mandrills, okapi, red river hogs, pygmy marmosets, hornbills, fish and lizards. The animals that you would naturally find living alongside the gorillas in nature.
  • Madagascar: Home to the zoo’s lemurs along with other creatures that originate from the island and would naturally live alongside the lemurs, such as Nile crocodiles, fossa, mongooses, sifakas, tomato frogs, radiated tortoise and the amazing Madagascar hissing cockroach, amongst others!
  • Wild Asia Monorail: A seasonal section that is operational during the summer months but weather dependent. You can enjoy a ride on the monorail through the Wild Asia section where you can spot some of the zoo’s bigger residents including the Indian rhinos, tigers, babirusa, red panda, Przewalski's horse, gaur and tufted deer.
  • African Plains: Home to the animals you would normally see in the savannah and includes lions, antelope, gazelles, giraffes, ostriches, African painted dogs, hyenas and zebras, so some of the park’s larger residents.
  • Himalayan Highlands: Home to the beautiful snow leopard, who you would normally see hidden in the Asian mountains and green meadows along with red pandas and cranes, so they are in the Himalayan Highlands section.
  • Sea Lion Pool: Watch them splashing around and having fun in the water! A very popular part of the park since its early days.
  • Tiger Mountain: A clever area for the resident tigers which includes a pool for them to swim and cool off in. However, part of the pool area is against a viewing window, which means you can watch the tigers when they are swimming and they regularly swim up to the viewing window to greet you, giving you an up close and personal experience!
  • Butterfly Garden: A magical indoor space that the butterflies share with birds and fish and some tortoises! Walk in and you feel transported to an peaceful land as the ambience hits you! You will hear the sound of the birds singing as the butterflies gently float past you and may even land on you! Spot the pond with the koi fish in there and just enjoy the space!
  • Big Bears: Home to the zoo's brown bears. Watch them as they relax or if they have a burst of energy, watch them swimming and playing in their pond! Splashing around and enjoying themselves!
  • Aquatic Bird House: Home to one of our favourites, the penguins! Watch as they waddle around and take a swim. Maybe you will prefer to watch the flamingos as they stand on one leg! You can also see some beautiful spoonbills in this section along with the flaming red scarlet ibis and others!
  • American Bison: The huge American Bison is the national mammal of America, as designated by congress in 2016! You can see the zoo's herd in this section. You can't miss them - the strong animals are rather large!
  • Carter Giraffe Building: Home to another firm favourite, the zoo's giraffes. Did you know giraffes can spend up to 20-hours a day grazing! In this section along with the giraffes you will also find other animals that you would naturally find in Africa with them, including aardvarks and dwarf mongoose. Did you know that a giraffe's heart is about the size of a basketball! When you think about the distance their hearts need to pump blood all the way to their brains, it makes sense!
  • Birds of Prey: You can find falcons, eagles, owls, vultures and condors. You can learn why these birds are so important to our planet's eco system.
  • Dholes: Meet the Asiatic wild dogs that sound like a clucking chicken when they talk! Dholes, which are also known by other names including red wolves or whistling dogs. Dholes may look like foxes, but foxes they aren't! Dholes are part of the Canine family, whereas foxes aren't. Just in case you were wondering!
  • Gelada Reserve: The Gelada Reserve is home to geladas, ibex and rock hyrax, again, all of which would be naturally found in the same area in the wild. Gelada's are sometimes referred too as bleeding heart baboons due to their similarity to baboons, but they have a patch of red skin on their chests - thus the 'bleeding heart' connection.
  • Mouse House: The small but nimble mammals that have big roles to play in our world! Come and see the cute and furry critters! The house is slightly darker as the residents are generally nocturnal animals, so are mostly awake at night, so the zoo keeps their habitat dark for them. You will also find furry chinchillas. Did you know that chinchillas can shed fur to escape and even drop their tails if they are caught! Their tail won't grow back, but they can live without it! You can also find skunk's the large eared fennec fox (large eared isn't part of the name - but they do have very large ears!) and various breeds of rats in the Mouse House!
  • World of Birds: An amazing 30,000 square foot section that is home to birds of all shapes and sizes at Bronx Zoo. If you like bird sounds, you will love the World of Birds!
  • World of Reptiles: Home to a variety of little and large creatures from the reptile and amphibian world, from snakes to frogs to lizards to turtles, oh, and did we mention crocodiles! A great place to visit on a cooler day as its indoors!
