What You Can See on the Atlantis Cozumel Submarine Experience

You get transferred to the submarine by a short boat trip along the coast, before arriving at the submarine, where you can see:

• Chankanaab Reef: The submarine visits Chankanaab Reef, which is part of the Mesoamerican Reef System. Through the viewing windows, you can look for tropical fish, coral formations and other marine life in their natural habitat. The species you see will depend on the conditions and the marine life present on the day.
• The Felipe Xicoténcatl Shipwreck: One of the highlights is the Felipe Xicoténcatl, a former naval vessel that was deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef. The wreck provides a habitat for marine life and offers a different sight from the surrounding coral formations.
• The Cozumel Wall: The tour also takes in the Cozumel Wall, which is an underwater drop-off where the seabed descends into much deeper water.

About Atlantis Submarine

The Atlantis XII is a passenger submarine designed to take visitors below the surface of the Caribbean Sea off Cozumel. It has seating for up to 48 passengers and three crew members, with 26 viewports and a larger viewing window at the front.

The submarine is electrically powered and has the ability to stau underwater for 24 hours. It descends to around 100 feet (30 metres), allowing youu to observe the reef, marine life and shipwreck without getting wet. A crew member guides the underwater journey, pointing out features of the surrounding marine environment.

The shipwreck is a former U.S. Navy vessel that served both the Mexican Navy and the U.S. for nearly 40 years. It was used in rescue missions and anti-drug operations. It was intentionally sunk to create a habitat for marine life, encouraging the growth of corals and to attract sea life.
