The Aquarium of Genoa, or to give it its full title in Italian as it sounds even more impressive…! “Acquario di Genova”, and its also one of Europe's biggest aquariums! It was opened in 1992 as part of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, who was actually born in Genoa!
The aquarium is in the old harbour area and has around 70 different ecosystem set-ups which are from various locations around the world including the Mediterranean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Amazon Rainforest and others.
There are more than 15,000 creatures from over 400 species including turtles, sharks, penguins and lots of fish including colourful clown fish! It has interactive displays as well as fun educational ones which are aimed at both adults and children! Its not just aquatic animals at the aquarium though, in the Tropical Forest section, you can see reptiles including iguanas, frogs and snakes!
The aquariums are different shapes and sizes, depending on what animals are in them. Larger animals such as the dolphins and sharks are in huge tanks that offer great big viewing panels, so the sharks can swim straight past your face for an up-close encounter! The smaller aquariums have the clown fish, the seahorses and lots more!
The big golf-ball shaped dome next to the aquarium this is the Biosphere, which although part of the aquarium does require a separate ticket. In the Biosphere you can find over 150 different tropical plant species as well as trees, flowers and various bird species, reptiles and butterflies. Its only a small dome, but there is enough packed inside to enjoy! If you want to visit both the aquarium and the Biosphere you will need the combination ticket - click HERE for the details. If you only want to see the aquarium, you only need the aquarium ticket!
