The Acropolis of Lindos is an ancient citadel sitting at 116 meters up on the eastern coast of Rhodes, around 55 kilometres from the capital city, Rhodes Town. Its one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece due to its historical significance and architectural importance and has history dating back to ancient times with evidence of human habitation as far back as the Neolithic period. It was inhabited successively by the Dorians, the Romans, the Byzantine, the Knights of St. John and then the Ottomans.
The Acropolis of Lindos served as a fortified citadel with defensive walls and towers which were constructed by the various civilisations that lived there over the centuries. The fortifications were essential for protecting the city from various invaders and of course pirates.
Due to its position, it also offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape, the Aegean Sea, the town of Lindos below it, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also some of the nearby islands.
There have been many archaeological excavations over time including ongoing ones which have helped to uncover various artefacts and ancient structures which all add to the site’s history. They’ve found temple remains, residences and other structures which all help to piece together the daily life of these ancient civilisations.
