• Private Collection Origins: The gallery’s collection began as Cardinal Scipione Borghese’s personal collection. He was an avid art collector and a nephew of Pope Paul V.
• Napoleon: Even though the families were connected by marriage, in the 1800s, Napoleon Bonaparte controversially took several sculptures and paintings from the gallery to France. Although some were returned, some are still in the Louvre Museum.
• Restoration: The gallery has undergone extensive restoration to preserve its artwork, with one of the most significant restorations completed in the 1990s.
• Bernini’s Masterpieces: Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the greatest sculptors of the Baroque era, was only in his twenties when he created Apollo and Daphne and The Rape of Proserpina.
